What is traction? In simplest terms, it’s the process of trying to cause some separation/pulling between two bones at a joint (can be any joint). Typically, this can help reduce compression at the joint and/or provide a different stimulus to reduce pain. In my experience, clients that have had meniscal injuries or arthritis find great relief with this. Moreover, it is typically a good stretch most don’t complain about (you just have to sit and relax!). I will usually add this in for a lot of my knee clients
Here are 3 of my personal favorite “warm-up” shoulder exercises. Disclaimer, you do not need to do specific exercises for a warm-up, but these are 3 I like to do to prime myself for my workout.
1. Sidelying Open Books: It’s a good way to stretch out the thoracic spine (upper back). Honestly, it just feels good.
2. Sidelying Plank with shoulder ER: I like this to work on core/shoulder stability. If too challenging, can always start with a regular sideplank or perform in with the knees bent.
3. Loaded carry: The funnest/hardest one I like to do to improve shoulder stability while doing something functional like walking. Can always make this harder by increasing the weight/distance or even adding in a couple presses at the end of each lap 💪🏾
